BAMPTON WITH LEW CHURCH NEWS IS FOR MAY. 1947.
Dear Parishioners,
After the Annual Church Meeting it was reported that I had unwittingly hurt the feelings of many at the meeting by saying, "I hope that next year we shall have a large number of young people and not the middle-aged." Of course I did not mean to say that. How could our church exist without those I flippantly called middle-aged. They are the very pillars of the church, I could not carry on my job without them. The fact is I left out one little word - only -, I meant to say "not only the middle aged." I had so hoped that more of the young members would have been present, and was very disappointed not to see them there. May I offer those whose feelings I hurt my very humble apology. And may I say right now, I hope they will spew me I am forgiven by coming to the meeting next year and each bringing a young member with them.
At this said Church Meeting, a message was sent to John Rose expressing sympathy with him in his illness, and regret that he was unable to be present. Ever since 1921, when Church Councils came into being, he had been on the Council of this Church. The following week he passed on to higher service. For 60 years he had sat in the same seat in the Church and he was always there. For the greater part of that time he had been a sidesman and a bellringer. Surely the church has never had a more loyal and faithful servant, his love for his Church was inspiring, his passing over was the death of one, full of love for his God, looking forward with confident joy to entering the nearer presence of his beloved Master. He will be very greatly missed in Bampton, he always took such a cheerful interest in so many of the local activities, was always ready to play his part. and keep his wicket up against any sort of bowling. He was a Christian gentleman in every sense of the word, he will be a very great loss to the Church and the parish. May God rest his faithful soul in peace.
May I say again, I do so very much hope that every one will lend a hand at the Fete at Weald Manor on 1.
whit Monday, May 26th in aid of Church Funds.
To all those who gave so generously to the Easter Offering I offer my most grateful thanks, it
as very nice of you.
Yours sincerely,
GREGORY BATEMAN.
WHITSUNDAY, May 25th is another of those days of 'obligation', as it is called, which means that every member of the Christian Church who may do so, must be present at the central act of worship and thanksgiving of the Holy Catholic Church known by various names - Holy Communion; Holy Eucharist; The Lord's Supper; The Mass. I do most earnestly hope that all communicants in this parish will do their duty in this respect., We owe it to our Blessed Lord, that we should give him thanks in the way He Himself appointed, for the most precious gift of the Holy Ghost.

The Annual Vestry Meeting was held at University Farm on April 11th at 6.30.
The 1946 accounts were received and accepted.
Collections*for Church Expenses were £21. 9. O. Hospitals 19/-; Farmers Benevolent Institution 19/-; Earl Haig's Fund £1.11. 0; Subscriptions 19/6d; Received from Whist Drive £18. 7. 0; Salaries £15; Repairs to roof of Church £7; to the interior £7.16. 0; Lych Gate £2. 5. 0; Repair to Organ £3. 3. 0; Fire and Light £1.18. 0; Insurance £1.11. 3; leaving a balance of £2. 2. O. The balance from 1945 was
£1. 3. 6, making a total of £3. 5. 6. The balance
from 1945 was the first credit balance on record. For many years there has been a debit balance, but thanks to generous subscriptions in 1945 and the whist drive in 1946 the funds are in credit. It was hoped that those who subscribed so well in 1945 would continue to do so, but 1946 was disappointing, the Church cannot keep out of debt on collections alone, so subscriptions are asked for 1947. Will those who wish the Church to be kept open for services send their subscriptions to the Vicar.
